A beginner's guide to Ayurvedic herbs

September 30, 2026·1 min read

Ayurveda is a traditional system of medicine from India that is thousands of years old. Many of its herbs are now widely available in Kenya. Here is a plain-language introduction to a few of the best known.

Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera)

The root of this small shrub is traditionally taken as a powder, capsule or tea and is one of the herbs often described as an "adaptogen" in Ayurvedic practice. It has an earthy, slightly bitter taste, and people often mix the powder into warm milk with honey.

Triphala

The name means "three fruits". It is a traditional combination of amalaki (Indian gooseberry), bibhitaki and haritaki, usually sold as a powder or tablet and taken in the evening with warm water.

Turmeric (Curcuma longa)

A root used as both a spice and a traditional remedy. See our guide to cooking with turmeric and ginger for easy ideas.

Tulsi (holy basil)

A fragrant, peppery herb brewed as a tea. It is widely grown and loved in India, and has a place in daily home rituals.

Starting out

  • Start with a small amount and see how you feel.
  • Introduce one new herb at a time.
  • Buy from a seller who can tell you what is in the product.

Herbs can interact with medication and are not suitable for everyone. Ashwagandha, for example, is generally avoided in pregnancy and may interact with thyroid and sedative medicines. Always speak to a doctor or pharmacist first if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a medical condition, or take prescription medicine.
